When it is used
In oral or written speech when you talk about something finished, something that only happened once, something limited and precise
English equivalent - Past Simple and Present Perfect
Tense determiners: hier, autrefois, auparavant, il y a, etc.
How it is formed
The construction of the past tense is the following
avoir/être + verb in past participle
Group 1 - er becomes é
parler
j'ai parlé
tu as parlé
il a parlé
nous avons parlé
vous avez parlé
ils ont parlé
Verbs used with être:

You will also need to use all reflexive verbs with être (se laver, s’amuser, se rendre).
Unlike with avoir, when you use the verb with être, you need to conjugate it appropriately to the gender:
add feminine ending -e
and plural forms:
add plural ending -s
Example with être
je suis venu
tu es venu
il est venu (elle est venue)
nous sommes venu(e)s
vous êtes venu(e)s
ils sont venus (elles sont venues)

7. Vous (voyager) en Europe l'été dernier.
8. Tu (rencontrer) ton ami hier.
9. Ils (jouer) au football cet après-midi.
10. J' (regarder) un film hier.
